Bookshelves Made from…books!

5 Sep dictionary_shelf

Jim Rosenau, of Berkley, California, has been making bookshelves from books for quite some time. He says the idea came from (mis)reading Nicholson Baker’s Books As Furniture.

My first thought was… Are these really books? His answer..Yes, they are really books. I remove some of the paper and replace it with a sturdy armature of salvaged lumber.” (more…)

Shopping Cart Furniture

13 Jun

Ramon Coronado is one of a few folks across the globe who is taking “flipping furniture” to another level with his shopping cart furniture. Creative imagination, artistic prowess, and access to junk just about covers the criteria for all things FLIPPIN’ AWESOME!

Doug Meyer, owner of Rustic Rebirth in Ohio, not only makes chairs from shopping carts, but he even has a loveseat made from two (2) wheelchairs!

I was first introduced to Reestore, based in the U.K., when its owner was pitching his idea for a business that specializes in flipping furniture on Dragon’s Den, the Canadian (and original) version of American Inventor. Reestore also has a sofa made from a bathtub! Yep. A bathtub sofa.

My First Reupholster

8 Jun

In 2005, I found two pieces of furniture that I couldn’t wait to beautify. The one above (purple) was dingy white and free on Craigslist. The one just below was sitting with no cushions by our dumpster.

PURPLE CHAIR:

I carefully removed the old fabric and used it as a pattern for the new fabric. A little bit of research and a lot of staples birthed my first major DIY project.

ORANGE/BLUE:

This one was a bit easier since I was starting from scratch. After measuring the chair, I headed downtown Los Angeles to the garment district and bout foam for the seat.

After some bed time reading…

I found my “next” DIY project on Kindall’s Creations via Tip Junkie

O-H-I-O!

10 Oct

(It’s) round on the ends and high in the middle – O-HI-O! I couldn’t help it. I’m a Buckeye! However, this time I won’t be talking about football or the dance team. Instead, I’m cheering for  APOC – or A Piece Of Cleveland!

APOC, part of a deconstruction movement in the Northeast area of Ohio, rescues wood and other materials from demolished homes and uses them to build furniture. Because they are passionate about preserving the history of Cleveland, each piece of furniture comes with a Rebirth Certificate detailing the history of the wood/materials.
