My Denim Wedding Dress

7 Oct

Denim wedding dressOn my 34th birthday, I exchanged vows with my husband in Ashland, Oregon in December 2008.  He owned a tailored denim suit from Goodwill and I wanted to coordinate so I made my wedding dress from denim!

I think, therefore I make.

I drew it out on paper, then started cutting. There’s nothing more gratifying to me than creating something with your own hands. The dress wasn’t “perfect” but I felt like a Queen in it.

During a cross-country road trip from NYC to L.A. in 2005, my then-boyfriend asked me to be his wife. I don’t think he realized that if he married me that he would be marrying my DIY habits, too!

  • Late night sewing
  • Frequent visits to Goodwill
  • Numerous “I can make that!” outbursts
  • A few incomplete projects
  • Curbside rescues waiting to be re-loved
  • “I can produce my own show” revelations

You’re looking at the unfinished dart and the undone zipper, right?

~Looking into the future~ {www.flippinfactory.wordpress.com}

One of the first things I noticed when I first saw this photo is that I could see my shoulder blade. Unintentionally, I went down from 180 lbs (9 months pregnant) to  118 pounds two years after the birth of our child. Magic trick – the stress of being a first-time mom with lots of unfinished projects AND lots of breast feeding.

The other thing I noticed is that darn zipper again. I don’t think I thought that one through.

 Lovers. Baby. Wedding. Tattoo Rings. Exactly in that order. And, in denim!

    Tumaini, you had me at ‘denim wedding dress.’ How beautiful you look as a united family, and refreshing that you made it your own, and did not have to go over a budget. Best wishes, and many happy celebrations to come! Your baby is adorable…
